Volunteers and Staff Bring Holiday Happiness to Houston Area Youth
                Sunday, December 13, 2015, 1:30 p.m. - 4:15 p.m.

Who/What:                 The Ensemble Theatre will host its 15th Annual Santa at The Ensemble community service event benefiting Houston area underserved youth.

Santa at The Ensemble is a day of entertainment and activities with toys and books provided to each child and workshops for parents. Attendees come from a variety of school programs and organizations offering social support services.  The event has benefited over 4,300 children since it began fourteen years ago.
This year the children will see excerpts from the encore run of, Stepp Stewarts A Soulful Christmas, The Ensemble Theatre’s 2015-2016 Season, holiday musical.  Each child will also have pictures taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Other activities include: an ornament making workshop, festive airbrush face painting, a lesson on healthy choices for food and go-green initiatives, a behind the scenes actor’s rehearsal experience, a special performance by The Ensemble Theatre’s Young Performers along with storytelling by FOX26 Anchor Melinda Spaulding.

Santa at The Ensemble was created by The Ensemble Theatre Board Member Renee Logans as a way to give back to the community. Volunteers help run the event each year with The Ensemble Theatre Guild and other organizations soliciting donations for toys and books. This year Santa’s helpers for the day include volunteers from: The Ensemble Theatre Guild, Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., BP America, Schlumberger, Port City Chapter of The Links Inc., FMC Technologies, ADSI, and Walmart. All volunteers participate in the theatre’s endeavors to provide a memorable holiday season to youth in the community. The Ensemble Theatre was founded in 1976 by the late George Hawkins to preserve African American artistic expression and to enlighten, entertain, and enrich a diverse community. Thirty-nine years later, the theatre has evolved from a touring company operating from the trunk of Mr. Hawkins’ car to being one of Houston’s finest historical cultural institutions. The Ensemble is one of a few professional theatres in the region dedicated to the production of works portraying the African American experience. The oldest and largest professional African American theatre in the Southwest, it holds the distinction of being one of the nation’s largest African American theatres owning and operating its facility and producing in-house. Board President Emeritus Audrey Lawson led the capital campaign for The Ensemble’s $4.5 million building renovations that concluded in 1997. The Ensemble Theatre has fulfilled and surpassed the vision of its founder and continues to expand and create innovative programs to bring African American theatre to a myriad of audiences.
